Australia’s outlaw motorcycle gangs are back on the front page, with fresh allegations of all manner of nefarious deeds in Victoria. But their story goes back much further.
Born from disenfranchised men returning from World War II, these clubs evolved into global criminal enterprises, with drug trafficking their biggest money spinner. It was the Hells Angels who imported their American “family recipe” for amphetamines in the late ’70s — and the market has boomed ever since.
Today, outlaw biker gangs compete for the title of public enemy number one, with tentacles stretching into business, unions, law enforcement and government.
Even Kings Cross had its own chapter in the saga. An outfit called Notorious brought buff bodies and bling to a scene once known more for scruff than swagger. They didn’t last long, but they made an impression.
